Chapter 3 – Change Is Good

Alan stood as did his guest and they walked toward the two shocked young ladies in their bathrobes. Both of them were wondering how long he had been there and whether or not he had heard them in the shower and then after the shower. They also wondered who that mysterious guest might have been.

“Ladies, this is Sadie McElmore,” he said as Sadie extended her hand.

“And Sadie, this is my sister Alicia and apparently her girlfriend and neighbor Trina.”

Trina and Alicia looked at each other with their mouths agape, unsure what to say and how to respond. They were embarrassed and their faces began to turn red until Alan started laughing.

“Don’t sweat it, kids,” he chuckled, “I am not one to judge anyone. I just want you both to be happy.”

Alan and Sadie moved to the kitchen where they prepared hot cocoa for the four of them and then joined the girls back in the living room. It was there where Alan told the story of his co-worker and friend, Sadie, and how the two of them had been making eyes at each other for months and Sadie finally asked him to lunch.

The four of them made for an enlightening and exciting mixture when gathered together. They were filled to overflowing with concern for each others’ happiness and there was not an ounce of judgment but rather pure enjoyment. They would grow to be great friends and when Sadie and Alan were married, it was his sister who stood up for him as his “best man.”

Trina and Alicia stayed together as well and when it became legal in their state, they were married in a civil ceremony and yes, Alicia did finally move out of the guest room. Trina’s parents were far less than happy about the arrangement, but the love between Alicia and her neighbor’s daughter was unmistakable and undeniable. It took them a few years to accept the relationship their daughter so enjoyed, but when they did, it changed their lives and their attitudes.

It started with a simple dog-walking experience and a torrential downpour to expose what had been so masterfully hidden, but once exposed, it changed everything.

Alicia and Trina would adopt a daughter a few years later and they would be together to watch her graduate and eventually marry. They relished the thought of being grandmothers and in proper fashion; they spoiled their grandchildren with impunity.

That’s how happiness becomes a daily requirement; through a simple act of caring for another and expressing the same, a whole magical world of love can be explored.
